We had been in a relationship for 9 years, and for the last 2 years, we were in a long distance relationship. Three days ago, it was my birthday. I was excited because, 15 days earlier, he had started planning for my birthday. When the day finally arrived, I was overjoyed. Around 8 PM, I cut the cake during a video call with him. But soon after, my life turned upside down. Out of nowhere, I received a call from a girl who wished me a happy birthday and then started a conversation.
She gradually revealed that she had been in a relationship with my boyfriend for the past 2 years. She shared details about when they met, how their relationship began, and everything else, complete with proof. I was shocked and felt utterly betrayed; it was like the ground had been ripped out from under me. I never could have imagined it. I was numb my brain simply stopped functioning.
I immediately called him to confront him with what I had just discovered. I wanted to believe that the girl was lying I still trusted him. But when he admitted to his mistake, it felt like my world collapsed. For the last 2 years, I had been trying to convince my parents to accept him for marriage. I had cried in front of them, telling them that I would never find someone better, while he was cheating on me the whole time.
He tried to explain that it was just an attraction, but my question is, can an attraction last for 2 years? He shared the same kind of bond with her that he shared with me. Throughout these 2 years, he managed to cover his tracks perfectly, telling me lies day after day. He hid everything from me and fabricated entirely different stories just to maintain a positive facade in our conversations.
Now, he’s apologizing, admitting his mistake, and begging for another chance. He claims he will prove his loyalty 100% and that he wants me back. But what should I do? I still love him, but for the past 2 years, I’ve been living a lie. He avoided video calls to keep me from finding out the truth, refused to share his screen anything to hide his double life. Now, I’m left shocked and heartbroken, my trust shattered.
He’s promising that he’ll never make the same mistake again, but how can I believe him? Should I even consider continuing this relationship?
